Juicing

We have just introduced fresh (only fresh) orange juice to my 3 1/2 year old daughter.  Of course she loves it!  She juices her own every morning.  This is a great project for you to teach your toddler to do.  They will feel independent and accomplished.  They will also get to enjoy their hard work.

Enjoying The Change Of Season

Fall is such a beautiful time of year.  The crisp air, the smell of rain on the asphalt, the changing color of leaves, outdoor fireplaces with a crackling fire and so much more.   However, the change in weather patterns can be quite dramatic.  One day you are wearing shorts and the next you are wearing bulky sweaters.


But back to one of the best parts of Fall.  The food:  right now I have spaghetti and butternut squashes on my counter to bake.  I also have pumpkin seeds soaking in preparation of roasting.  Then, there are pumpkin breads and pies, yams and rutabagas.

My children are learning to enjoy the beautiful seasons that we are so lucky to have in the Pacific Northwest.  A fun thing that my kids and I do together is "leaf hunting."  We grab a cardboard box and go looking for pretty or extraordinary leaves.  In my kid's eyes, that is every leaf. This little routine  gives them exercise and me an opportunity to teach them why the leaves are falling, and the reason they change colors.  It's just one of many small things you can do with your children to embrace the new season.

Acting Out For Attention

My three year old loves to have company over.  Like most children she gets extremely excited when guests arrive.  Occasionally it's hard to channel her energy.  She may do something that she never does, or say something she typically wouldn't say.  I find that the more I ignore it or reprimand her, the more she will act out.  The best solution is to get them involved in something.  They are obviously bored and feel left out of what is going on.  Spend a little time and energy and get down on their level.  Give them an activity and show them a little attention.  Once they have received the attention from you and the guests, they will proceed with their project/game/activity.  Obviously it depends on what age your child is.  Toddlers especially need to feel that extra special attention.

Pictures last forever

Taking photos of our kids is something we will never regret.  Planning a fun day and then snapping photos as we got is best.  The kids don’t remember it as a “photo shoot” and we have amazing memories on film.  I use a busted camera that barely works, but I bring each photo into a program called, “Picasa,” to edit it.  The program is free off the internet and it makes collages, puts frames around them, and will remove any red eyes caught.  Let’s have fun with our kids and capture their beautiful smiles as well.  When we look back at the pictures as grandmas our hearts will be warmed all over again.

Spring

Spring is here!  Get your children outside into nature.  Soak up the vitamin D and enjoy God's beautiful creations.  Our family went to the Woodland tulip festival in Washington.  Teaching our children about the growth and beauty of flowers was enjoyable for all.

Gardening With Your Kids

Teaching your children how to garden is a great exercise and learning experience.  Not only will they enjoy it, they will learn great tools from responsibility, education, patience, hand/eye coordination and much more.  My advice would be to take off church clothes, otherwise they will get extremely dirty.  Daddy!!




Planting bulbs will teach them a lot of detail.  They will feel like they have greatly accomplished something.  The interaction and teaching them the outcome brings joy to the parent.



Gardening is for all ages.  Babies love to play in dirt.

Cloud Hopping Playdate

This is a very charming set up and the kids will absolutely love it.  The theme
is whimsical, musical and educational.  During the playdate, the kids make their own streamers.  You can use ribbon, felt strips or any other kid safe string.
 It's best to tie the ribbon around a large ring.  You can use plastic shower
curtain rings or large plastic bangle bracelets.  The kids will be waving them
around while hopping from cloud to cloud so you don't want to use stick like
objects for the streamer handle.  We used blue painters tape to form the cloud
shapes on the floor.  We chose painters tape because it doesn't leave any
residue or glue after you remove it.  When the kids arrive, let them make their
streamers as the craft activity and then for the fun, have them jump from cloud
to cloud.  Play some music as they hop.  Stop the music to see who hopped the
most clouds.  Play again to start the hopping.  Make sure the clouds are close
enough so their little legs can reach each cloud in one hop.  During this
palydate, the kids learn fine motor skills while making the streamers, following
instructions with the stop and go and muscle development with the hopping.  The
playdate also has a fun take away-the kids will enjoy taking their newly made
streamers home to show dad!

Mix powder ingredients together in frying pan.  Mix liquid ingredients together in bowl with desired choice of food coloring.  Turn heat on to warm powdered ingredients.  Add liquid and stir over low heat.  It will get clumpy instantly.  Mix then take off heat.  You may need to add a tablespoon or two of water.  It helps to knead together with your hands.  Let cool.  Then play!  You can save this play dough for a day or two in an air tight container in the refrigerator.

Teach your toddler to make their own snack.  How great is that?  The child is completely consumed, learning, having fun, and filling their belly at the same time.

Re-directing Energy

Toddlers are like the Energizer Bunny; that energy can sometimes be challenging.  For me the most challenging time of the day is the late afternoons, early evenings.  It's the time of day when dinner has to be prepared,  toys have to be picked up,  etc. in  anticipation of daddy's arrival.    No matter if you have one child or six,  you are facing the same challenges.  I find that if I re-direct my child's energy,  it helps tremendously.  She knows when I get stressed and she pushes those buttons even more.  If I find something unusual for her to do, or something that she doesn't  normally get to do, it helps re-focus her energy.   Examples can range from the goofiest to the most unusual.  Whatever distracts the child until my work is done. Here are a few ideas of re-directing your child's energy in the kitchen
1.  Count grapes from one dish to another
2.  Organize the canned goods in your pantry or cupboard
3.  Sort pens and pencils into different piles
4.  Undo your Tupperware and have them match the lid to the actual piece of Tupperware 5.  Chop a fruit or vegetable with a butter knife (depending on the age of toddler)
6.  Organize a utensil drawer 7.  Wash vegetables or fruits
8.  Peel carrots or other vegetables (depending on the age of toddler)
9.  Measure out water and pour into a bowl
10.  Spoon uncooked rice, beans or noodles into a fun container pot for cooking (even though you may not cook it).
